Choosing to adopt a dog is something to which one should give serious consideration. It is a good idea to gather information about the particular breed of interests since factors like personality traits, energy levels, health, grooming requirements, temperament and size can all have a major impact. When looking for Royal Standard Poodles for sale, knowing what to expect can make the selection easier.

In the U. S., the Poodle ranks 8th on the popularity list issued by the American Kennel Club. Their attractively elegant looks, extremely high intelligence, energetic personalities, and fun loving spirits, are all reasons why they are so desired. Not only do they perform well in competitions, but they make fantastic personal companions, and very affectionate family pets.

Toys, Miniatures, and Standards, are the only three official size categories for this breed. When one speaks of Royals, is referring to a dog that is larger than what is normal for this kind. This group, which also goes by the moniker of Giants, typically reaches a height of 22" to 28" at the withers, and weighs up to 90lbs as an adult, with a lifespan of between 12 and 18 years on average.

The appearance of these dogs when properly groomed is rather squared, as their legs are in proportion to their body, meaning they are the same in height and length. They have rounded, small skulls, with a straight, narrow muzzle, dark almond-shaped eyes that are far-set, and flat ears hanging long and close to the head. Their top line is level with a rigid, upheld tail, and oval shaped petite feet with arched toes.

These dogs have an interesting distinction of growing hair instead of fur, which may be either tightly corded, or softly curled, with both styles being low dander and no-shed. Typically, their coloring is solid, with blood being the most common, though apricot, cream, brown, Cafe Au Lait, gray, silver, blue, and white are also found. There are some multi-toned groups known as Tuxedos, Parties, Mismarkeds and Phantoms.

When selecting a puppy for adoption, new pet owners should be aware that it is not uncommon for this breed to change color up to about 2 years of age. The parents' coloring does not necessarily dictate that of the puppies. Offspring of various hues can all be born within the same litter regardless of what the Dame and Sire look like.

When it comes to grooming needs, these dogs are kind of high-maintenance because their nails and hair grow constantly and need to be attended properly. They are quite active and very social, so they require lots of exercise and plenty of attention. Because the breed is so intelligent, they can be trained easily, although it is important for owners to remain consistent, as the dogs have a tendency to want to claim the position of Alpha when it seems no one else has.

The ability to live in either hot or warm climates and adapt to apartment or house living, lends a lot of versatility to these dogs. Though the breed is not aggressive, they will bark to warn and protect their family when loud or unexpected noises occur. The adoption transition can be more pleasant and much smoother when one is aware of the different attributes of the pups.
