According to the information provided by the American Kennel Club, there are many breeds of dogs classified as working dogs and the Portuguese Water Dog is one of them. As suggested in the name, these breeds originated from Portugal from a place called Algarve. The name of the dog in Portugal translates to dog of water in the English language. There are several other names used for the dog in Portuguese, including Algarvian water dog and Portuguese fishing dog.

The popularity of the breed grew very fast from Algarve to the rest of the coast and then the world. When one is searching for high-quality Portuguese water dogs Virginia should be the first location to check out. Breeders located in Virginia provide puppies that are well-fed and well-maintained to clients. They make sales to Americans all over the country at very low costs, which makes them preferable.

The closest relative to a PWD is the standard poodle. These two breeds share a lot of features in common. For example, the coat in both breeds is curly or wavy while the toes facilitate swimming by being webbed. The dog has a high level of intelligence and never shed. PWDs are more robustly built when compared to standard poodles, which makes the main difference between the breeds. Their legs are also more stout.

The height range of male PWD that is fully grown ranges between 51-58 centimeters. Their weight varies from 18 kgs to 27 kgs. Like is the case with other breeds, females weigh less and are smaller in body. Female PWDs weight 16-23 kgs and grow to a height of 43-53 cms. The single-layered coat never sheds. People who are allergic to dogs tend to love this breed because of lack of shedding of the coat.

The breed comes in a wide range of color shades. Some of the colors that are commonly observed in conformation shows include black and white, plain white, brown, and silver-stripped animals. Dogs with brown or black coats tend to have white spots on the chest, paws, or legs. White colored PWDs are very uncommon while the predominant color comprises of a black body with white markings.

There are two main types of coats in PWDs, that is, curly and wavy. Most dogs have coats that combine the two hair patterns. The combination of the two patterns involves the ears and tails having wavy hair while the rest of the body having curly hair. Leaving the hair untrimmed and unattended makes it to grow indefinitely, causing several problems.

When the hair is left to grow without being attended to, it causes skin irritation. The hair also impedes vision. One can avoid the issues related with long unattended hair by having the hair trimmed once after every two months. Brushing the hair after every two days is also a requirement.

This breed is great at providing company. It has a loving temperament and is also intelligent and independent. It is highly trainable. It can lean agility and obedience skills easily. Giving a good introduction makes it easy for them to get used to strangers.
