The business of dog breeding has become very lucrative that it has attracted many inexperienced breeders. That poses difficult when it comes to choosing a breeder to people who are not aware of what to look for. Finding a good Labrador retriever breeder may be very difficult in some cases. This article presents information that can make the choice easier.

Visiting dog shows has come out as one of the best ways of finding good breeders. Such shows usually carry many breeders of different calibers. The shows also allow buyers access to AKC marketplace. Besides dog shows, one can also find useful information from parent clubs of the breed they are interested in. It is easy to locate parents clubs in the US using American Kennel Club website.

To some breeders, dog breeding is only a hobby that they engage in on a part-time basis. They are usually engaged in another full-time job most part of their day. Such breeders can be a real turn off if one is not aware of that. As such, it is important to consider several breeders and to be selective in the choice. The individual one settles for should be highly experienced and very knowledgeable in the field of animal breeding.

The facility where breeding is done must be visited before one makes a choice of the breeder to make a purchase from. The parents of a puppy must be inspected too. One can have an idea about what their dog will be like when it is grown by observing the appearance and temperament of the parents.

One should observe the facility carefully during their visit. Its condition should be good and the floor and walls should be clean. No odors should be emanating from the facility as well. Puppies should be lively, clean, well fed, and friendly. One should watch for signs of illness and malnutrition. Protruding rib cages is often a sign of malnutrition while runny eyes and nose, coughing, lethargy, and skin sores are often indicative of illness.

One should also pay attention to the interaction between the breeder and the puppies. Good breeders will appear to genuinely care for the puppies and the adult dogs. The puppies should not appear to shy away from the breeder. They should also be very outgoing with strangers. Puppies that keep their distance and appear to be withdrawn should not be acquired.

One should establish a good rapport with the seller in order to acquire more knowledge about the puppy being purchased. In case of any problem with the puppy in the near future, one can comfortably contact the seller and discuss how to resolve it. One may be required to sign a contract before taking away the animal. Responsible breeders need buyer to sign such contracts so that they can reclaim the animal if the buyer no longer can offer the required care to it.

Puppies should not be taken while they are still very young. They need to be allowed to attain a minimum of twelve weeks of age. They need time to socialize and bond with their mothers and littermates before being taken away. This promotes good growth and well-being.
